Raising Awareness During Stress Awareness Month 2025

For decades, millions have used the month of April to raise awareness of stress—its causes, how it affects us, and how we can better manage it.

As a company that regularly supports people dealing with both debt and the stress that often comes with it, we want to take this opportunity to reflect on how deeply intertwined financial difficulties and mental wellbeing can be.

What Is Stress Awareness Month?

Established by the Stress Management Society in April 1992, Stress Awareness Month aims to open up important conversations around stress. It’s a chance to reflect, share experiences, and learn how to reduce the stigma around stress-related mental and physical health issues.

This year’s theme is #LeadWithLove—a call to approach ourselves and others with more kindness, empathy, and compassion. Whether it’s being patient with loved ones, listening without judgment, or treating yourself with care, small actions can make a big difference.

The cost of living crisis continues to add pressure to many households, making this year’s message more important than ever. Talking about stress and sharing your coping strategies could be the first step in helping someone else feel less alone.

Stress and Debt: How Are They Linked?

It’s no surprise that debt and stress often go hand in hand. According to the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, nearly half of those struggling with their mental health are also in problem debt.

Our own 2023 data revealed that over 12% of people who came to us for advice mentioned mental health as a key reason for their financial situation—second only to borrowing beyond their means.

The stress caused by financial problems can stem from many factors—job loss, benefit changes, rising bills, or simply the pressure of keeping up. The fear of opening bills, dealing with creditors, or admitting to friends and family can feel isolating and overwhelming.

But hiding from the issue can make it worse. The first step toward easing that stress is reaching out for support.

How to Get Involved This April

The #LeadWithLove theme encourages us all to make small, intentional changes to how we treat ourselves and others. Here are a few ways you can take part this month:

  • Talk openly about stress with friends, family, or colleagues
  • Share how you manage stress—it might help someone else
  • Show compassion to others who may be struggling
  • Take time for self-care—whether it’s a walk, a good meal, or just rest

And remember—these aren’t just for April. They’re practices we can all benefit from year-round.
