Following on from our recently updated ‘Money saving tips for university students’, we’ve created a list of ways to keep graduation costs down.
While it’s certainly a milestone worth celebrating, the associated cost can quickly mount up. If you or a family member are graduating, here are a few steps you can take to enjoy your special day without overspending.
Guest tickets
Often, universities offer a set number of graduation guest tickets for free, with further spaces available to purchase at a price.
If this option looks like it will be too costly, consider holding a celebration at home for your loved ones. Provided your university has a live stream of the ceremony, they can gather to watch that and enjoy your big moment remotely.
Travel
Whether your graduation is taking place in your university town, or you’re heading back to campus, travel costs can add up.
Ideally you should aim to arrive at the venue at least 60 minutes early. If it’s possible to take public transport, take advantage of early bird train or bus ticket prices by booking in advance.
But if you have to drive and have family or friends attending, consider carpooling to split fuel costs and parking fees. Look at your university’s official transport page for designated parking spots and shuttle options. Apps such as www.appyparking.com and www.parkopedia.com can also be useful for finding cheaper parking spaces close to your graduation location.
Photography
Professional graduation photos can be expensive, but capturing memories doesn’t have to be.
Plan in advance and ask a friend or family member with a good camera to take photos for you at select locations around your campus. A good camera phone and a well-lit setting can often produce a perfectly good photo.
If you do opt for professional photos, check if the photographer offers packages that include cheaper digital copies rather than prints. You can then get your pictures printed yourself at cheaper providers such as ASDA Photo, Max Spielmann or Photobox.
You could even create a shared album online, where friends can upload and download photos, ensuring everyone can access the memories.
Accommodation
For those travelling from far away, finding somewhere affordable to stay is crucial. And as with public transport, being organised and booking in advance is key when it comes to accommodation.
Airbnb and hostel options may turn out to be more budget friendly than hotels, so shop around. Also check if your university offers discounted accommodation for graduates and their families.
