Cool Your Home Without Heating Up Your Bills

When summer hits and temperatures climb, it’s natural to reach for the fan or fridge, but all that cooling comes at a cost. If you’re worried about rising utility bills this season, here are some smart ways to stay cool while keeping your costs down.

Use Fans Wisely

Fans are cheaper to run than air conditioning, but they can still rack up costs if they are left on all day.

Top tips:

  • Use fans in short bursts, especially in the evening
  • Place a bowl of ice in front of the fan to cool the air
  • Turn fans off when leaving the room (they cool people, not air!)

Close Curtains and Blinds During the Day

Sunlight streaming through windows can significantly raise indoor temperatures.

Keep blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day, especially on south-facing windows.

Avoid Using the Oven

Using the oven adds heat to your home and boosts energy use.

Opt for no-cook meals, slow cooker recipes, or batch cooking early in the morning when it’s cooler.

Keep Showers Short and Cool

Shorter showers use less water and gas/electricity. Switching to cooler water can also help regulate your body temperature.

Unplug Unused Devices

Electronics like TVs, chargers and consoles continue to use energy even when not in use – and they generate heat too. Unplug anything you’re not actively using to reduce your energy bill and keep your home cooler.

Switch to LED Bulbs

Still using halogen or older lightbulbs? They use more electricity and give off extra heat.

LED bulbs are a simple switch that can help reduce both energy usage and the temperature inside your home.

Let Cooler Air In at Night

When the sun goes down and temperatures drop, open your windows to let in the cooler evening air, just be sure to close them again in the morning before it heats up.

Do Heat-Generating Chores at Off-Peak Times

Washing machines, tumble dryers and even dishwashers can add heat to your home.

Use them in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler, and look for the eco mode to save on electricity.
