Money-Saving Tips For Christmas 2025

Money-Saving Tips For Christmas 2025

It may seem a little early to think about Christmas already, but saving up during the year is the best way to avoid feeling the festive financial pinch. Trust us, you’ll thank yourself later! Read on for our money-saving tips for Christmas 2025.

Use Round Ups

Make the most of your spare change by turning it into savings!

The majority of high street banks offer a ‘Round Ups’ or ‘Save the Change/Pennies’ feature to make saving feel as easy as spending.

For example, if you spend £2.30 on a coffee using your debit card or contactless device, your bank would round up the amount to the nearest pound (in this case, £3). Then, they’ll send the spare change (in this example, 70p) to your savings account.

This way, you can save little and often on small, day-to-day spending. The major UK banks that offer this feature include, but are not limited to:

  • Natwest
  • Starling Bank
  • The Royal Bank of Scotland
  • Lloyds Bank
  • Chase UK
  • TSB Bank
  • Ulster Bank

If you’re with a bank not included in the above list, you can use the financial app, Moneybox, to save with ‘Round Ups’. Click here to see which banks Moneybox supports.

Wait for the Best-Value Sales

The festive period is the season for sales. With Black Friday kicking off in November and Christmas sales ramping up throughout December, it’s hard to know when the best time is to start your Christmas shopping.

Our answer would be to spread your spending out across the year. Bigger sales, like Black Friday, aren’t always good value. If you’re buying seasonal gifts fit for winter, such as jumpers, hats, scarves or gloves, these items are often cheaper to buy during summer sales when demand for them is lower and retailers want to get rid of excess winter stock.

Don’t Ignore Second-Hand Gifts

Second-hand gifts can often be overlooked. We’re here to tell you not to!

Local charity shops or online marketplaces, such as Vinted, Facebook Marketplace and eBay, are all great places to look for pre-loved gifts at cheaper prices that are just as good as buying them first-hand.

In fact, 2024 Vinted research revealed that nearly two-thirds (63%) of shoppers had bought second-hand items as Christmas gifts at some point in the past, and were also comfortable with receiving pre-loved presents.

Make the Most of Discounts

Retailers constantly offer us the chance to save money through various discounts and coupon codes. But, it isn’t always easy to find these ourselves.

Browser extensions, like Honey, are free and easy to download. Whichever retailer you are searching for gifts from, Honey will scan over 30,000+ websites for the best coupon codes available.

Avoid Using Credit Cards

According to money management app Snoop, people spend about 39% more on their credit cards in the run-up to Christmas, compared to 8% more from their current account.

If you use your credit card for your Christmas shopping and don’t make repayments in full each month, this can leave you with a huge credit card bill in the new year.

So, we would advise you to avoid credit card spending if you know you will not be able to make monthly repayments in full.
