Since the recent disruption in the Middle East has led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for global oil and gas supplies, UK fuel prices have risen sharply. This has caused rapid increases in essential costs for households, businesses and the wider economy. As 56% of British households continue to struggle with an increased cost of living, this uplift in fuel costs is adding even more pressure. To help you find cheap fuel near you, we’ve rounded up a few of the most popular price/station comparison websites and apps below.
Fuel Finder
Fuel Finder is a free-to-use website (with no need to install an app) that lets you compare the cheapest petrol, diesel and EV (electric vehicle) charging prices near you. All you need to do is:
- Enter your postcode, town or city into the search bar.
- Select ‘Petrol (E10)’, ‘Diesel (B7)’, ‘Super Unleaded (E5)’, ‘Premium Diesel’, ‘HVO’ (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) or ‘EV Charging’.
- Choose your search radius using the filter (5-50 miles).
- Browse the map for current prices at all fuel/charging stations in your area (based on official UK fuel data from the Government’s Fuel Finder scheme data feed).
There are free/standard or ‘Pro’ accounts available with additional features. Visit Fuel Finder’s FAQs page for more information.
Fuel Map UK
Similarly, Fuel Map UK is a free website which shows you average UK fuel prices (for Super Unleaded, Unleaded, Diesel, Premium Diesel, Biodiesel and HVO Diesel) across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Simply filter by fuel type and zoom into the map to find your local area.
PetrolPrices
Finally, PetrolPrices has a free fuel price map you can use in your browser, or a free app available for iPhone and Android users.
The fuel price map works the same as Fuel Finder and Fuel Map UK – just type in your area, filter your search (based on fuel type, whether you want the cheapest station or the nearest, fuel brands and distance) and it will show you the best results based on your choices. Important: The fuel type filter only includes Unleaded, Diesel, Super Unleaded or Premium Diesel.
If you download the app, you can:
- Find and compare cheap fuel prices across the UK.
- Save filters based on your most frequent searches.
- Add your vehicle to its ‘virtual garage’ feature to receive a reminder when it’s due for MOT (you could get exclusive offers related to the car you drive).
- Help keep the prices up to date by confirming or updating any that have changed.
- Leave station reviews based on the best customer service or prices.
- Check what facilities a station has before you set off.
