Debt Solutions Scotland
supporting financial wellbeing

If you’re struggling with your monthly repayments, but feel you could repay what you owe given enough time, the Debt Arrangement Scheme lets you do just that.

The Debt Arrangement Scheme (DAS) is a debt management plan that was introduced by the Scottish government. Instead of juggling multiple repayments to creditors, DAS gives you the ability to deal with all of your unsecured debts via one, affordable monthly payment. Interest and charges are frozen from the outset and are written off once the plan is successfully completed. So, if you are struggling to keep on top of your debts but feel you could repay what you owe given enough time, DAS may be an option for you.

Unlike protected trust deeds and bankruptcy, DAS doesn’t affect the things that you own.

When you apply for the Debt Arrangement Scheme through Cleanslate®, they will deal with your creditors on your behalf, taking the stress out of the situation. They will be by your side throughout your payment plan. Recognising that your financial circumstances can change over time, DAS can be flexible too.

No more juggling multiple payments to creditors. One affordable monthly payment in DAS covers them all.

Your interest and charges will be frozen by law as soon as your DAS application is submitted.

How do you apply for a Debt Arrangement Scheme?

Before applying for any debt solution, from any provider, you first need to get debt advice. You should never start a debt solution without first knowing all the options.

It’s impossible to enter a solution with a regulated organisation without getting debt advice first, so any firm that offers to enter you into a solution straight away is probably unregulated and should be avoided.

Most providers will need you to book a telephone appointment so they can give you initial debt advice. These can be lengthy – usually an hour or more – and not everyone is comfortable discussing their situation with a stranger on the phone. At Angel Advance, we recognise that this can, for some people, be a barrier to getting help, so we have made it as easy and stress free as possible.

Our online service allows you to complete initial debt advice completely online. You don’t need to speak on the phone unless you want to. You don’t even need to provide a phone number, just your email address so you can save your progress and we can email you a copy of our advice.

At the end of your enquiry, we’ll present you with your options, and let you know which one we recommend for you. You then have the option to apply, or you can save your progress and come back later once you’ve taken some time to consider your options. When you’re ready to make an application, it’s simply a case of booking a phone call to discuss your chosen solution in more detail.

Rest assured much of the initial work has already been done by this time and the information you’ve provided will be shared with your advisor, so you don’t have to do it again.

If you prefer to get help over the phone from the start, you can book a telephone appointment for a date and time to suit to you. We work hard to design our services to suit you and your needs. Talking about debt is never easy, so communicate with us in whichever way makes you most comfortable.

Key advantages of DAS:

Your monthly payments will be based on what you can afford.

The interest on your debt will be frozen.

You will be protected against creditor action.

Your assets will be protected meaning you will not be asked to sell your house or your car.

Cleanslate® will deal with creditors on your behalf.

If your circumstances change, DAS can be flexible, including options to request to vary the plan and/or take payment breaks if your income has significantly reduced.

Existing wage arrestments will stop once your DAS is approved by creditors.

Key disadvantages of DAS:

You will be required to make all payments towards your DAS and continue paying your day to day expenditure and bills. If you fail to do so, your plan could be revoked.

You will be unable to obtain credit or use an overdraft while you are in a DAS.

Your credit file will be updated to reflect the fact you are in a DAS.

Frequently Asked Questions:

The Debt Arrangement Scheme is available to any individual (or couple) living in Scotland struggling with unsecured debt (with a small number of exceptions). You cannot apply for the Debt Arrangement Scheme if:

  • You are in a protected trust deed.
  • You have been declared bankrupt, and have not yet been discharged.
  • You are subject to a time to pay direction or order.
  • You are paying debts under a conjoined arrestment order.

Details of your DAS will be placed on the DAS Register (available online) and will remain there until your payment plan is complete. In order to discover this information, someone would have to actively look up your name on this register. The DAS Register shows the proposed start and end date of the plan, but does not disclose the size of debt or monthly payment.

Yes, you can still use a bank account; however you won’t be able to use an overdraft facility.

The Debt Arrangement Scheme covers all of your unsecured debts, for example credit cards, store cards and catalogue debts, overdrafts, unsecured loans, payday loans and debt owed to HMRC. It also includes arrears on your mortgage, rent, utilities or council tax.

Your home will not be included regardless of its value.

Your car will also be excluded, however, if it is of high value you could consider replacing this with a lower cost alternative to help reduce your debt level.

Your household goods such as furniture, computers and electrical equipment will not be taken into consideration.

Your credit file will be updated to show that you have entered into DAS. This means you won’t be able to obtain credit while you’re in this plan, and may find it difficult to do so for a period after this has ended. You may however find that you have less need to borrow anyway, having taken back control of your finances.
